How Foreigners Pay in China: Alipay & WeChat Pay Setup (2026)
Most shops, taxis and restaurants in China are paid by QR code. Both Alipay and WeChat Pay let foreigners link an international Visa, Mastercard and some other cards.
Setup checklist (do it before you fly)
- Install Alipay and WeChat from your app store and register with your own phone number.
- Add your card in the wallet section; verify your passport if asked.
- Test a small payment once you land.
Fees
Alipay and WeChat state that small payments are free for foreign cards and a fee (around 3%) applies to larger single payments; thresholds change, so check the app's fee notice before paying.
Backups
- Carry some RMB cash; by rule, merchants should accept it.
- Big hotels and malls often take international cards.
- The Alipay "Tour Card" feature may appear for some users.
